By now, you’ve probably bombarded your pals with your Spotify Wrapped and your music streaming obsession. But guess what? There’s more musical fun to dive into! Spotify’s bringing back the “Playlist in a Bottle” feature, a year after it first dropped on January 5, 2023. This cool tool lets you stash away your current favorite tunes in a musical time capsule, and you can only crack it open exactly one year later.
We all know our music taste is like a rollercoaster – today’s jam might be tomorrow’s meh. But what if you could freeze your current faves and groove to them in the future? Well, thanks to Spotify, you can! Let’s get started and cook up a surprise for your future self!
What exactly is Playlist in a Bottle on Spotify?
Last year, Spotify introduced a cool feature. Here’s the deal: You answer a quick questionnaire from Spotify, but instead of typing responses, you use songs. Once you’re done, those songs become the foundation for a playlist that Spotify hangs onto for the entire year. Come next January, you can revisit your playlist, see what you had chosen a year ago, and get a feel for how your music taste has shifted (or stayed the same).
It’s a fun concept, but I can’t help but wish Spotify would keep these playlists around for more than just a year. Yearly recaps are awesome because, let’s face it, you probably jam to so much music that it’s a blast to look back at stats and tracks you might not even remember playing earlier in the year. But a short playlist of songs loses its charm after a limited time. Maybe, someday, they’ll extend it to two years, five, or even fifty. (Assuming there are still folks working at Spotify by then, of course!)
How to See Your 2023 Playlist in a Bottle (if You Created One)?
If you created a playlist last year, it’s time to open it. Simply grab your smartphone and go to http://spotify.com/playlistinabottle. Then, click on Claim Your Playlist. This way, you can save and enjoy your 2023 playlist whenever you like. But make sure to do this before January 31, or you’ll miss out!
How to Make a Playlist in a Bottle on Spotify?
1. Open the Spotify mobile app and visit spotify.com/playlistinabottle.
2. Click on Get Started
3. You’ll be directed to a page where you choose where to place your playlist. You can pick an actual bottle or change your selection by swiping left or right or using the navigation buttons at the bottom. Tap Next when you’re ready.
4. On the next page, Spotify will ask you several questions. You need to answer at least three questions, and there are different options to choose from. You can change the question by tapping New Question. If you’d like a suggestion from Spotify, tap Random or you can enter a song name to answer the question. Spotify will show songs that match your search term below the search bar. Select the song you want, then tap Next. You can continue answering more questions by selecting Keep Going or finish by choosing I’m Done.
5. On the following page, you can add more songs by tapping Add Songs or lock in your playlist by selecting Lock in.
6. When you’re finished, you can share your card on social media by tapping Share or return to Spotify’s app homepage by clicking the back arrow in the upper left.
How Spotify’s Playlist in a Bottle Operates?
Once you seal your Playlist in a Bottle on Spotify, the platform will bring it back to your attention a year later. It’s worth noting that you can only create one Playlist in a Bottle. Moreover, access to this feature will be closed by Spotify after January 31, 2023, ensuring that everyone who creates a playlist will be reminded of it at the same time in January 2024.
The best part is that this feature is entirely free, so you won’t lose access even if you cancel your Spotify Premium subscription. Unlike a regular playlist, Playlist in a Bottle is unique because it revolves around a specific theme. Of course, you can still create a Spotify Playlist anytime you like without these restrictions.
Final thoughts
Playlist in a Bottle offers a cool way to store songs you want to listen to later. Just follow the steps outlined above to add songs with specific themes, and Spotify will gently remind you to check out your playlist in 2024.
