Here’s everything about Instagram Reels Algorithm In 2022, and what you can do to make the not-so-secret recipe work for you.
If you’re a social media enthusiast, you’ve probably already read our guide to the Instagram algorithm in your quest to improve engagement on your business Instagram account. But, if you really want your Instagram Reels to stand out, you should be aware that this Instagram feature has its own unique algorithm to contend with. So lube up and prepare to enter the ring.
Instagram Reels are, of course, the short-form videos introduced by Instagram in 2020 as a competitor to TikTok. Simple editing tools enable creators to use effects and filters, string together multiple shots, and incorporate music clips to create fun, engaging Instagram Reels in just a few minutes (they don’t disappear after 24 hours, unlike Instagram Stories).
Instagram Reels Algorithm In 2022: All You Need To Know (1/2)
But, like everything else on Instagram, your potential for viral stardom is at the mercy of the all-powerful Instagram algorithm: that behind-the-scenes code that decides whether to serve up a video to the masses or bury it in obscurity.
Here’s how the Instagram Reels algorithm works in 2022, and what you can do to leverage the not-so-secret recipe:
How does the Instagram Reels algorithm operate?
The Instagram Reels algorithm determines which Reels are shown to which Instagram user. (How bossy!)
You’ll see Reels from accounts you follow in your main feed, but there are two other places you can find Instagram Reels from other creators and brands:
- The Reels tab: This is essentially Instagram’s version of the TikTok For You page. Tap the Reels icon at the bottom of the Instagram app’s home page for an infinite, scrollable feed of Reels chosen by the algorithm.
- The Explore tab: Reels are also prominent in Explore, alongside Instagram Posts and Stories served up by the Instagram algorithm. (Speaking of which, check out our guide to getting your content on the Instagram Explore page.) I suppose we’re also bossy?)
There are numerous factors that influence when and where Reels appear.
Relationships
The Instagram algorithm looks at how you interact with other users as well as how you interact with content. Is someone following you and looking for you by name? Do you send each other messages or leave comments? Do you include each other’s names in your posts? If another Instagram user is clearly your BFF or superfan, Instagram is more likely to share your most recent video with them as soon as it becomes available.
That being said, Reels and Explore are likely to serve up videos from creators you’ve never heard of… However, if you have previously interacted with them in some way — lurkers, raise your hands high and proud — Instagram takes that into account as well.
The content’s relevance
Instagram monitors user affinity, which is a fancy way of saying “whatchu like?” If you’ve liked or interacted with a Reel or post in the past, Instagram remembers the subject or topic and tries to serve up similar content in the future.
How does the AI determine the topic of a video? Through your Instagram Reels hashtags, but also through pixel, frame, and audio analysis.
TLDR: Watching videos of dogs playing basketball leads to more videos of dogs playing basketball. It’s the circle of life at work, and it’s a beautiful thing.
Timeliness
The algorithm prioritizes new content over archival Reels. People want to know what’s new, and the algorithm gods do as well. Please keep the new drops coming!
Popularity
If you have an engaged audience and content that consistently receives likes and shares, Instagram will recognize that you have something special that other people might enjoy as well.
Sure, it appears to be a catch-22 that you must already be popular in order to become popular, but Instagram is ultimately in the business of promoting quality content… So, if you already have a reputation for producing excellent work, the app will reward you. (Could this be the only true meritocracy in the world? We’re still reeling.)
